No they are not! Look at the big businesses that buy equipment and keep very careful track of equipment cost and repairs. If they found that dry filter elements caused them to rebuild engines or repace equipment faster they would demand and get oil bath. No manufacturer would refuse them when they are buying million dollar plus equipment. I had an ONAN air cooled engine that was rated at 5000 hour overhaul interval in dirty conditions, yet my liquid cooled Ford at N has about a 2000 hour interval. Diesel tractors with dry filters got over 10K hours on an engine.
I think that myth was started buy 2 groups of people.
1. The real tight wads who like oil bath cause it's cheaper in the short term.
