Are you saying the engine starts to turn over then the starter releases and the starter "runs away"? If the engine turns over once the engine should crank. You either have a problem with fuel, compression, or ignition. These old engines are very easy to crank if tuned properly. I doubt you have a major problem with the starter if the engine turns over at all. Fix the other issue of tuning first. It could be a worn flywheel ring but I believe you have other problems that need attention first.
