We are lucky CaseIH has made the things that are online available. Evidently they have chosen to reserve any general parts lookup capabilities for the dealers. Not to speak for them, but is a capability their normal customer base rarely needs. The dealers can go online to look up parts numbers, but it isn't the sort of thing that usually generates sales. So don't expect anyone to do it for you unless you have a good friend on the other side of the counter.
There is a huge amount of data that is stored and has to be accessed to find where a part number is used (may be part of the reason they don't give public access). Even back in the mid-'90s, the CaseIH where used took over 100 pages of microfiche. I can't imagine how many feet of books it would take. This was AG only, no truck etc. numbers.
For most people, posting it here is probably the best (maybe only) way to get a part IDed. Somebody may recognize a part and be able to tell you, with or without a part number. At the least, somebody may be able to identify the type machine. For example, if somebody says it looks like a planter part, you might be able to find it by checking 3 or 4 planter books. Face it, if you aren't willing to check 3 or 4 books, you don't want to know that badly. If you post here, don't withhold information. Tell us everything you do know. Here are some tips on getting help:
- Post a picture, include something in the photo so people know what size it is (like a 12-inch ruler!).
- Include the part number, even a partial of the first few digits may help. Be sure to include the letters. 12345D and 12345R1 are different parts!
- Tell us about guilt by association. "It was in a box of grain drill parts." says a lot more than "It was in a box of parts." It may not be a related part, but if it is it may help someone ID it.
- Finally, just be civil and just ask your question. If you start with a long gripe about what you can or can't find online, of how a guy at the dealer blew you off, other people are likely to blow you off too then go read somebody else's post. After all, looking up a part number requires some effort. Don't annoy people when you are asking for a favor.
