I did a bit of research on this subject a few years ago. There is quite a bit of difference say wix and fram or, *gasp* STP (Cut one of _those_ open for a shock!)
I also found out the majority of the filters were made by Champion Laboratories and they do all kinds of private label. They will make a filter to your exact specs, good or crappy.
Also found an extensive test of air filters and to make a long story short, the K&N does flow more air and does so because it catches less dirt! Kind of a common sense thing.
