I perfer to use a gen light instead of a diode for a couple of reasons. First the gen light serves as a current limiter and will only add about 1/4 amp exciter load to the ignition switch circuit, which is the most common exciter power connection point in old tractor alternator conversions.
The gen light only adds about 1/4 amp load to the ignition circuit, while a diode does not limit current and allows the alternator field to draw 3-4 amps, nearly doubling the load on the ignition circuit and can cause voltage drop induced weak spark / hard starting.
Also, the gen light serves as an indicator that 1 the alternator field circuit is working, 2 the alternator is charging , or 3 that you forgot to turn off the ignition and will run down your battery.
all in all a win win deal compared to using a diode.
