Mel, After you have replaced the distributor cap, hook up the wires like the manual says to do it. Plug # 1 is closest to the radiator/then back to #4 by the gas tank. Remove # 1 plug and place your fingur over the hole while someone else is cranking the engine over slowly. You should feel pressure trying to push your fingur away from the hole. When you no longer feel pressure, stop the cranking and check for the mark on the front crank pulley lining up with the pointer on the front timing gear cover. Now check to see where the rotor is pointing. Should be towards the post on the dist. cap for #1. Wire that post to the forward most spark plug. Going clockwise on the distributor, the next post should be wired to the #3 plug, next one to #4 and last one to #2. Hope this helps and post your results.
