Sounds like the coil is going bad, try a replacement for "testing" purposes.
If the new coil makes no difference check the voltage at the battery first, then the coil while cranking the engine ( coil wire removed) could be the starter is pulling too many amps and not enough left over to supply the coil.
Bad ground at the battery, frame, starter or cable ends corroded will also cause this problem.
The little "solenoid" on top of the starter may need a good ground contact ( bolts that hold it to the starter) or possibly replaced.
Just guessing here, but these are some of the problems I have found that drove me nuts.
