I assume we are referring to a common Delco 17si Alternator. These are the ones with a big terminal on the back and two little ones on the top. The big one on the back is the charging terminal and can be run via #10AWG wire to the battery or any cable that connects to the battery. The #2 terminal-right on top as you look at it from the back is a voltage sensing terminal and can be jumpered to the Bat termianl above. Finally, the #1 terminal-left one- is the exciting terminal. It needs to be connected to a source that is on only when the iginition is on or you will drain the battery, i.e. coil lead from ignition switch. It needs either a resistor, diode, or sidemarker light hooked into it or you tractor, once started, will not shut off. Only other way around it is to get a "one wire" alternator. I would do the #2 jumper and put a light in the #1 wire and run it to the coil (ignition switch side). Also the light will tell you if it is charging properly. JerryU

If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce
