Tom - You can skip the ammeter without any problem - simply run a #10 wire from the BAT terminal on the alternator to the battery terminal on the starter switch. Your other idea (jumper from the alternator #1 terminal to the starter button) will not work - it'll quickly drain the battery when shut down. Instead recommend using the warning light per the diagram. The light's cheap, easy to hook up, and will tell you if the alternator quits working, the fan belt breaks, etc. Otherwise without the ammeter a charging system failure will go unnoticed until the battery goes dead. Single wire alternators are OK, but have their own problems: Cost more than a standard alternator, and they have a tendency to run down the battery if the tractor's not started and run every few weeks. Bob M PS - Fitting an alternator under the hood of an H is a REAL tight squeeze....but it can be done.
