Sorry to differ with you, but a motor is not a resistor. Motors consume current based, in large part, on the load on them.

When you run a 6v motor on 12v, with it's original load designed for 6v, the motor does turn faster, but is not loaded more, and DOES NOT OVERHEAT. I know this from experience many times over. I guess I should make some amperage measurements to compare, but the 6v motor is designed for more amps than it takes to turn the engine on 12v and there is absolutely no excessive hazard in burning them up. I think they last a lot longer than 12v starters in 12v service.

What seems common sense that they would overheat would be true if the load was also doubled when you changed to 12v. Think about this, if you have a tractor designed for 12v, and you try to start it on 6v, does the starter overheat? Of course, less voltage requires more amperage to do the same horsepower job.
