Jim - I'm finishing up a similar repair to my Super M. In my case the nut that holds the gear on the end of the cam shaft unscrewed and fell off. This resulted in the cam gear slowly flopping itself to death inside the gear cover. There was lots of metal in the bottom of the timing gear cover, but other than chipping a couple of the other gears, seemed to have caused no harm to the rest of the motor. A new gear has been purchased and installed and I'm in the process of putting the tractor back together. Link below has some photos of the work in process. Suggest at a minimum you get the I&T manual for the letter series Farmall (#IH-8)- it's about $20. Also highly recommend buying a repro parts catalog for your model. That will run $30 or so at Binder Books. You'll find it's worth it's weight in gold for repairs like this. Good luck!!
