The use of 1/2" material (medium carbon steel) is best. 3/8 will bend and dent. Support on tips of grousers is good, with no span exceeding 13 or so inches. If supports are to be placed between points, they should be of the same strength as the band. Placement on the inside of the steel allows better trailering, and (to me) better look. Tank production manufacturers are able to produce the loops for a nominal fee. Welding the splice should be at least 70,000psi rod, and full depth penetration. Ground flat, the weld disappears.
