I have never been into one, but I imagine he meant the valving. Wrong and it could try to turn it the opposite direction you are turning the input. What you are doing is when you turn the input shaft a minute amount, the valving applies pressure to turn the output motor, if the valving is right, in the same direction you turn the input. I have a Char-Lynn on my 1958 240U and Dad had one installed on a JD 60 that he bought in 1958, so I've used them, but never worked on one. I worked in the Engineering Experimental Lab at Cessna for 25 years before Eaton bought them, then 13 more for Eaton before retiring 10 years ago.
