About three things here to be concerned about. First, if you have to tap it on you are putting some force on the oil pump drive gear, second, if it goes back far enough it will loosen the expansion plug behind the cam so then you can split tractor to replace it. Third, that engine has none or at most one cam shaft bushing so pulling the cam out is actually quite easy. No big worry about scratching the bushings when pulling out and back in.
