Don't really know the best answer to that. When IH went to the unshielded bearings and no grease fittings hydraulic transmission oil was used with oil return to the transmission a little different than early models. You can find unshielded bearings installed later along with axle caps with no grease fittings on M tractors on up. Shielded with the right amount of grease at the correct intervales may be extra insurance if the tractor is operated with one side high for long periods. For incorrect greasing the open is probably better. When the open bearing is installed with grease fitting axle caps, plug the fitting holes.
