i am saying you dont need a mark of anykind on the pulley to watch for degree's. all you do is just watch the running mate while turning the engine over. when in center of the valves rocking on running mate,thats when your on tdc of cyl. to be adjusted. i do not take spark plugs out either to adjust valves, as some people do to find #1 cyl. compression stroke. not saying anything wrong with doing it your way as i have done that too, lots on 350 chev engines, cause its easier with 8 cyl's. running mates were taught to me in 1976 when i went to school and got mechanic's licence.
