My 240U has been changed to 12v and I always had a problem with the starter not engaging every time... it would spin and grind against the starter ring on the flywheel. Finally it quit completely, took it to the local auto-electric shop and told the guy the way it acted before it quit. He said when he repaired it he would change the field windings to 12 v and it would stop that... that it was spinning too fast before the starter drive engaged the starter ring with the 6v windings. Now it not only doesn't grind the gears, it starts faster than it ever did. I think the windings were about $75 in addition to repairing the starter, but it's sure stopped a lot of headaches.
