Good advice from my friend Jim, Im NOT in any way shape or form a Ford man but know hes right SOME Fords used a Class B system while MOST Delco gennys were Class A AND YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE CORRECT A OR B VR OR YOU MIGHT FRY SOMETHING they are NOT interchangeable.
You need to ask on the Ford Forum but I was thinkin the 8N was Class A while later Fords were the Class B BUT I REALLY JUST DONT KNOW. However many of the Autolite VR's were indeed for Class B SO AGAIN I DONT NOW WHAT VR YOU HAVE
If you have a good working Delco genny you wanna use I believe Id match it with a correct Class A VR (which ALSO is suitable for the Polarity you choose) and then wire like Jim noted. Id take it to an old fashioned mom n pop genny/starter repair shop if any exist anywhere near you n let them figure it out. I could lay out a bunch of techy info to help figure it out but that takes too long and if your not a techy type you probably wouldnt be able to follow me
