Let me comment that the genny/VR combo that's there has been there since I bought the tractor three years ago. (And since the paint on genny matches the rest of the tractor, and is old, I'd guess it's been there a while.) If they're mismatched, the smoke was let out long ago--before I bought it.
Having said that, it is entirely possible that the charging system has never worked since I've had it. I do put a battery charger on it from time to time. And the battery I bought only three years ago won't hold a charge anymore.
The VR is the early Ford one--they changed it later, so it's probably A--I can check that.
