Don't overlook the groove where seal runs on coupler, like said, may need speedy sleeve or new coupler nut. Also, they have either a bushing or needle bearing depending on vintage and they definately wear out. If shaft is loose seal will not hold. To get coupler off, I usually try a few good wacks in counter clockwise direction with hammer and brass drift. If that does not work I just pull them apart and clamp gears in vise. Not unusual to find good reason inside for taking them apart.
