Those big screws that hold the field coil iron pole shoes in place seem to really FREEZE IN PLACE. Ive seen the local genny shops here take a big hammer and give the gennys outer case around where those huge screws are A GOOD HARD SHARP RAP and then use a hammer driven big impact screwdriver and they come right out........ Its gonna take a good cleaning and solder job (then heat shrink) to make the connections and where the 2 windings splice in the middle keep that tucked away and safe. When doing all this Id have the commutator turned and undercut if needed,,,,,,,,Install new brushes if needed,,,,,,,,Install bushings if needed.....Insure good grounds on both the genny and VR,,,,,,Polarize the genny prior to start up
