Those big nuts alwsays get chewed up. No problem, I finally ground two big flats on mine, and use a Cerscent wrench. Once you get inside there, it may be the worm gear worn, it may be no seal in t he bottom of the housing letting all the oil drain out, it may be the sector geaar. I had lots of these problems, , the latest was the sectror gear nut needed tightening down. Keep at it, yuou"ll get it.
