I'm thinking the planet gears have to be turning in the t/a planet carrier or the tractor wouldn't roll in gear. Maybe if the t/a clutch hasn't been used in a long time it won't disengage or the linkage or other problem won't let it disengage. If the t/a planet carrier bearings got bad enough and got hot enough to kind of weld to things so that the carrier was locked, that would kill the engine if the t/a clutch won't disengage. Since I can't see the tractor i'm just throwing out some thoughts about were the problem could be.
Still thinking, scratch part of that, if the planet gear carrier is locked up and the t/a clutch won't disengage the tractor wouldn't roll in gear pulling it.
Also does this tractor still have the t/a handle and linkage hooked up. If not and the short connector rod from the main clutch operating shaft to the t/a clutch operating shaft is still there. That may be releasing the t/a clutch and letting tractor roll in gear. But if you don't have a t/a handle that will release the t/a clutch. When you let the main clutch pedal back up it engages the t/a clutch. This could kill the engine if something has the t/a clutch carrier locked from turning, or the planet carrier is locked. If you don't have a t/a handle, try operating the t/a clutch manualy and see if the engine kills.
