Are we taking about a standard offset LoBoy or a numbered series LoBoy?
If if a standard version, on the bottom of the transmission case is a drain plug. After draining, flush with diesel/kerosine and drain again. As you are draining, check for the missing spring and detent ball. Slide the fork and rail back, then loosen and completely remove the bolt on the fork and slide it back forward while holding the rail in place. Then slide the rail back some more till it clears the casting on the inside of the transmission. As you are doing all this, place a rag over the hole in the casting in case the spring and ball are in there to prevent them from shooting across the shop.
Use a small magnet on a stick to check the hole that the rail slides into and make sure it's clear. It may be that the ball is in the front of the chamber and preventing the rail from sliding all the way forward into gear.
