How Do I Read a Painted-Over Serial Number?

I'm trying to find out what the tractor serial number is for my 300 Utility. Unfortunately, some "gentleman" painted over the tag at some point in time. The paint is thick enough that I can't make out any part of what may be underneath it. First, the easy solution: The engine serial number is 23999. Did IH publish a list that indicated which tractor serial number went with which engine serial number? If not, the harder solution: Was the tractor serial number stamped or engraved, or merely painted on? I'm thinking of going at it slowly with a rag soaked in some solvent such as lacquer thinner. A stamped or engraved number should show up pretty well, and even a painted number may be legible. Of course, it will likely destroy any non-engraved markings on the tag. That brings me to my final question: Where can I get a reproduction tag? Thanks in advance for any help/advice. Mark W.

It was the only
