Both are good engines the 310 just happens to be a little better. For starters it doesn"t ues glow plugs which can be a pain in the butt. However if you are vigilant about keeping your glow plugs and cables in really good shape the 282 will start okay with patience. The 310 will start really well with either a block or tank heater. If you have neither of those things the 310 is not going to start very well in cold weather. I would not hesitate to buy a well maintained 310 with 5000 or less hours of running time. You start pushing 7000 to 8000 hours and you could be getting close to overhaul time which will be ungodly expensive even if you can find all of the parts. The 282 is okay but I would much rather have a 310 with some life left in it. 282"s also tend to have some head gasket issues.
