Try squirting a little gasoline into the carb for first start to see if you get a different result. don't forget, these have a fuel pump and it takes a little to get fuel up to the carb.
However, you can also check the compression on each cylinder to see if you have a valve issue. If you run fine after it starts, I highly doubt you have a valve/compression/vacuum issue.
The other thing you can do is to open the carb float bowl drain valve to see if you have fuel in the bowl before your first start. Try these things first and let me know.
