The tires are "the same" size. The 16.9-34 is just the new version of the 15-34. They are stock tires. They shouldn't rub. It is common to put 18.4-34s on and they do not rub.
To find if it is distillate or gas you could post the serial number. There will be some letters on the back that tell you things like that ie W12B means electric start and swinging drawbar If it has a hole in the hood for the starting tank or radiator shutters those are also good clues.
