It depends on what you are doing with the single action cylinder. As been said, you can use it with pulling lever back for normal raise, gently go to lower if wanting to go down slow or to float for quick drop. If you want quick drop though, it is best to use the other outlet for raise, pushing lever forward to raise, then float for down and leave it in float if your implement operates correctly in float. At that point, you pull it back to rear out of float to raise. This works really well with a single action cyl on the tail wheel of a semi mounted plow as is the recommended way to hook it. Not so well if you are using on a cyl that you only want to drop and hold part way down.
