If you have a generator, the positive ground is correct. Make sure your generator is 12V, not 6V (should be). MDs require a lot of starting current due to the high compression of the engine.

Since boosting it with another battery works, my guess is the starter and cables are OK and the battery doesn't have enough capacity to turn the starter at the proper speed.

Try a heavy duty 12V battery with as many cold cranking amps as you can get. You're going to need it this winter anyway.
