If that happened you shut off the kerosene under the main tank and opened the drain on the carb and drained it, then opened the gas petcock up and flushed out the fuel bowl, close the drain and fill it back up with gas. The intake was still full of kerosene so the primer cups allowed you to put a measured amount of gasoline directly into the head and cylinders (prime them) so it would start again.
If you have to put fuel in them the small tin oil can that came with the tractor works quite well. They have no purpose on a gasoline tractor and many tractors had them removed after adding the gas or cold manifold.
