I converted old man's 1953 SW6 over to 12V's this past fall, tractor still plows snow every winter for the past 60yrs. I was so tired of leaking 6v battries, generator not charging, etc. Put on a hitachi 35 amp alternator, rewired the whole tractor, put on 3 led work lights, biggest 12V battery that would fit in stock battery box. Put on whole system from Pertronix, ignitor, coil, wires. Also had local electrial shop go thru the starter, just cause. This engine has never started this well ever! Yes, its had new points over the yrs. Im assuming you have the right kit? Should be part number #1442, SM & SW6 should have the same IH distributor, lays horizontally, same engine. Red wire goes pos + to coil, black wire goes - of coil. Have coil part number 40611? Its a 12V coil, it takes 12V's, no resistor is needed. Could be air gap is too large, between the magnet sleeve & the ignitor. Next I would run couple wires, run a ground wire from the battery right to ground of the coil. Where ignitor is hooked to. If that doesn't work, disconnect red wire of the ignitor, run wire from positive side of battery direct. If engine starts, you have a low voltage issue. I have also heard about tape covering the module`s eye. Don`t give up, when it runs you will be 1 happy guy. Im still amazed how when the engine runs & starts. Been running this system all winter plowing snow, temps have 32F to -25F in western Canada. Runs like a dream, just wish it had a cab.
