Muffler comes off easy. Just two nuts. Sometimes only one.
Air cleaner cap comes off easy. Just pops off.
Hood comes off easy. Just four spring-loaded hooks.
Grille comes off easy. Just four bolts.
Cap comes off steering gearbox easy. Just four bolts.
Should take a non-mechanic like yourself about 15 minutes to get in there. Once you have the cap off the steering gearbox, you can see what's wrong.
Could be the steering shaft twisted off inside. Could be the gear shattered, split, or stripped out. Could be the vertical steering shaft twisted off or stripped out.
You will know for sure once the cap is off, and you will have to take that cap off to fix it anyway, so it isn't wasted work.
