I don't know about an M but on my 300u there was a little resistor behind the switch that was in series with the lights. The 12 v made the resistor smoke and I just removed it. The lights look the same on the "dim" position as they do on the high beam position.
I would think they go to the same places the 6 volt did, but here's another thing that's kinda hard to explain.. the back of the switch itself turned relative to the front, so when it should have been off it was not. You might want to look out for that.
