Tony: just place the dipstick into the filler pipe and the washer is supposed to rest on top of the pipe. This is also the how you measure the oil level in the Lift-all reservoir. Be sure to check that the washer is not a bit small allowing it to fall into the pipe!
Lift-alls with the 2-way attachment had a double-jointed dipstick that threaded into the filler pipe. It was very hard to get an accurate reading unless you waited until the tractor sat for several hours and all the oil drained down.
