A lot of these type seals are a line-type seal; one side of the joint is actually a cone, the other is shaped like a sphere. The mating of a cone and a sphere is a line, going around in a circle, and the tighter you tighten up the nut, the more presure you put to compress that line. If you look, you might have that sort of fitting. It can be as simple as extremely fine cleaning of the cone part and the sphere part, and maybe a just a LITTLE bit of gasoline-resist TFE sealer.
