the string repair you mentioned will get you out of a bind if the flare is not seating tight enough ,just slide the nut back far enough to allow you to wrap 4 or 5 rounds of thread or small string in the same direction as the nut tightens between the flare and the nut, this acts as a shim,not the best way but will work until it can be re-flared ,doesn't work on cracked or bad flares
