I just thought I would post a few pictures that I recently took while changing the auxiliary diesel fuel filter on my 1952 WD-9. Hopefully they will help someone else out who has questions about these filters. There has to be someone out there who has recently bought their first WD-9, WD-6, or Farmall MD and could learn from my situation.
Back in the early 80's when I first started working on these old tractors I had some questions about these filters. The original filters were the string type filters and my local suppliers all said that they were no longer available--just use the same paper cartridge filter for both the auxiliary and the final filter. That didn't work because the bottom of the final paper cartridge filter was smaller than the mating hole in the auxiliary filter base on the tractor. Apparently there were retrofit kits that were provided so the paper cartridge filter could be used in place of the string type auxiliary filter--I have never seen the kits (I hope that someone will be able to add to this post and provide information about the retrofit kit).There was no internet and no way to make connections with other collectors who would be able to help back them. Also, collecting obsolete tractors wasn't as big then as it is today.
The string type filter in the pictures below is a Fleetguard FF137. Unfortunately, Fleetguard has since changed the FF137 to a paper cartridge filter that looks very different and I don't think they will work anymore. Enjoy everyone--I hope this helps someone.
