Speaking of dentist and cranking, my granddad was a dentist from 1917 till 1967. Across the hall from his office was the town's doctor. Sometimes when the doctor had a patient with a broken arm, often from a kickback, he'd call in my grandpa to help. Grandpa said he would sit down and put his foot under the patient's arm pit and pull on the patient's arm as hard as he could pull while the doctor felt and squeezed to put the bones back in place.
