Every one has their favorite way of doing this. Mine is to line up the timing marks that are on the hub of pump to pointer on pump and it should be at about 17 degrees btdc. Then I pull injection pipes off pump head and tie them up out of the way. Take cover off in front of pump, remove the three bolts. Pull throttle wide open, turn pump with a wrench normal direction of rotation while watching the fuel coming out of fittings on pump head. That way you know if it stopped on number one or number six. Then take all other necessary lines etc off. Other ways also, like taking side cover off and when the line on gear comes around you are nearing number one, then proceed till timing mark on hub lines up. If pump is twisted off, all bets are off, go for position of valves or just take your chances being on one or six when at 17 degrees btdc.
