They can leak, but many never do. We have an original SH and it has never been out and doesnt leak. Were it mine (especially if it has oil in it yet) I would look to see if oil has made wet and juicy runs down from the shaft seal and or the control rod seal. If either, I would replace them if not, I would clean it up and run it as is. Jim
