Look at any operators manual or parts manual for the 123 SP combine and you will see that the engine is an IH flat-head six. These were modified from the pick-up engines that were then in use by IHC. The HD-213 and HD-232 engines became the GRD 214 and GRD 233 engines. The HD engines were initially a Willy's designed engine used in the 1934 D-1 pickup, then used in the C-1 (1935) and later in the D-2(1937) and D-15 pickups. The bigger HD engine was used in the D-30 truck. All other IH truck engines were indeed overhead valved engines. However, on tractor drawn combines IH tended to use Continental side valve engines (Y69) for the No 60, 61, 62, and 52R combines (until the U-1 (cub engines) were available for the 52R) combines. The No 20 and 22 harvester-threshers initially used the Fuller & Johnson engines (designed for IHC), until they were taken over by Waukesha when they were referred by that name. Later they also used the U-2 (Farmall A) engines. The Waukesha 113 cubic inch engine was modified and put in the first 2500 E-12 tractors as the new IHC 113 cubic inch engine was not ready for production
