I am an electronics engineer and when I first studied this stuff in the military (1950s) current was defined by the direction of electron flow (which is and always has been from negative to positive), but when solid state devices came along, some influential engineers apparently thought it was easier to define current flow as positive to negative and it has been that way ever since. Somewhere many years ago, I remember reading an article that talked about the "why" for positive ground, but I don't remember details. Very dimly I remember it said something about the corrosion that builds up around battery posts, but I have no idea if that was fact or speculation.
