I think if you measured it to the top petcock, or if it had a dipstick you would find the oil pan holds 7 quarts, so the additional quart is for the filter, likewise when it drains down the petcock or dipstick will show a quart overfull -- that is the way it is supposed to be. I never checked my M for that, I did check my Super H, the pan holds 5 qts up to the petcock, the total is 6 qts.
