Try to use nothing larger than a 37 amp "1wire" Delco alternator. A 61 or 72 amp"1 wire" alternator needs nearly twice as much rpm to self excite. Use as small a pulley on the alternator as you can find to run it as fast as possible. I find that it is much easier to adjust the alternator belt when I build the alternator bracket with slotted holes 2 inches long where it bolts to the engine. This allows moving the alternator up / down as well as sideways to tighten the belt. I also like the link type belts from a bearings and drives shop, that can be installed without removing the fan belt, plus the length can be adjusted so easily by just adding / removing links until it is right.
If Your "1 wire " alternator needs more RPM to excite than your comfortable with, nothing is lost, just buy a regulator plug and charge light to wire it up as a "stock 3 wire" alternator. The "1 wire" unit will work just fine when wired as a 3 wire and will excite at lower rpm, just like a normal 3 wire unit.
