Borrow your wife's hairdryer. Apply a little heat to those decals and you should be able to straighten them out, or at least remove them with no damage to the paint.
I have no experience with the vinyl decals, but with the mylar type, spraying the surface with Windex will let you move those decals around and achieve the correct position BEFORE they are permanently attached.
