Yes the original manuals say heavy oil in the transmission. IH changed that and at sell out time wanted hytran in them. When the transmission oil is at the correct level it will flow from the back of the transmission to the front wall of the center housing when equipped with a t/a. But in the center housing above the lower level is a dry area for the t/a clutch. Yes you will loose oil when the seasonal disconnect bracket is removed. Going to be some trapped there even if all 3 drain plugs for the transmission and center housing are removed. Only 3 places the disconnect or bracket can leak. Gasket, oring for the disconnect operating shaft or a seal ring where the operating shaft sleeve goes in the seasonal disconnect plate or bracket. Has a nut on the bottom side holding it in place. Nothing will fall out (unless broke parts) when the plate comes off. Just make sure when reinstalling that the shift lever that goes in the sliding dog goes in the groove. Now if I was a betting person. That dry compartment for the t/a clutch that I mentioned above. It has 2 drain holes in case oil leaks into it. When a cultivator bracket is use those holes will drain on the bracket and make it look like its leaking. Make sure that"s not where the oil is leaking from before draining transmission oil and putting some back. If leaking out the holes, 3 seals keep that dry and unless the front wall t/a compartment seal is the only leak the center housing and t/a removal is needed. Post above mentions how to find pictures on the case IH site.

I had been casually looking for a tractor for weeks. I saw a few 9N's, but they had even fewer amenities than the 8N my Grandpa bought new in '52 with a Dearborn loader. That was 10 years before I was born, so I grew up thinking that 8N was the world's best tractor. Grandpa had greenhouses, with over half an acre under glass, and that 8N did almost everything. It was the only
