Kenny - First thing I'd look at is the remaining existing wiring. Suspect there's a loose terminal crimp someplace, or maybe a section of conductor is frayed and failing intermittantly. I've rewired (3) early 50's Farmalls. All of them had the same symtoms - replacing the wiring cured the problem.
If your tractor's now 12 volt, #12 wire will be adequate. If you figure to rewire the entire tractor you'll probably need about 50 ft or so.
