I use to work in a shop that rebuilt starters & alternators. You might want to have your starter checked; it may need rebuilt. In a Delco-Remy (all starters) there is a brass bushing at each end, which the armature turns in. If these are wore, or the armature is bent, it will take more power to turn them. That would explain your wire heating up. Also, they should check your brushes to make sure that they aren't wore too bad. Have your armature "growled" & the fields checked, and the brush end of the "arm" for died spots. That might take care of most of it. Also check the solenoid. If the contacts are wore, it may not be making good contact from the power side to the starter side & taking more power. Good luck.
