Get a good mike & check it again.Mike it top to bottom with the crank all the way down as that is where it will be worn the most. Chances are it is worn some. As Jim said plastigage the old bearings and see what they are. Then check the thickness against a new one. You may need to put in .002 to get the right clearance, or get it ground to .010. Make sure you put in new mains. & plastigage them too..001 to .003 is good on both.
